Abstract:

The interconnectedness of the climate change, biodiversity loss, land degradation and declining livelihood resilience require approaches that move beyond isolated interventions, and integrate ecological restoration, productive landscapes, biodiversity conservation and community stewardship. This presentation introduces NatureScaping™ as a landscape resilience framework designed to connect these dimensions through context-specific, nature-based interventions.

NatureScaping™ conceptualizes the landscape as an interconnected ecological and social system in which agroforestry, habitat restoration, biodiversity enhancement, soil and water conservation, livelihood-supporting land uses and community participation can reinforce one another. Instead of treating conservation and development as separate objectives, the framework identify practical intervention points where ecological functions and community interests can be aligned. Agroforestry provides a productive interface between agriculture and ecological restoration, while biodiversity-focused interventions strengthen habitat connectivity, ecosystem functions and adaptive capacity whereas community stewardship provides the social foundation for long-term maintenance, local ownership and consistent landscape interventions.

The framework emphasizes place-based planning, participatory stewardship, ecological connectivity and demonstrable field-level interventions. It can be applied across heterogeneous landscapes where climate stresses interact with land-use change, ecosystem degradation and livelihood pressures. Its potential application extends from rural and agricultural landscapes to wetlands, drylands, urban–rural interfaces and other ecologically sensitive areas.

The presentation discusses the conceptual architecture of NatureScaping™, its relationship with nature-based solutions and landscape resilience, and its potential to integrate agroforestry, biodiversity conservation and community-led stewardship into climate adaptation planning. It further highlights the role of practical demonstration sites and locally grounded interventions as learning platforms for scaling ecological resilience.

NatureScaping™ therefore proposes a science–practice–community interface for climate adaptation, seeking to transform fragmented environmental interventions into connected, adaptive and stewardship-oriented landscape strategies. The framework offers a potentially scalable pathway for linking biodiversity, ecosystem resilience, sustainable livelihoods and community action in the transition towards climate-resilient landscapes.

Dr. Satya Prakash Mehra is an environmental and sustainability professional working at the interface of ecology, biodiversity conservation, landscape resilience and community-based environmental stewardship. His work focuses on practical approaches that connect ecological restoration, sustainable land use, biodiversity and community participation. He has been involved in environmental initiatives spanning nature conservation, landscape planning, agroforestry and nature-based solutions. His current work advances NatureScaping™, an integrated framework for strengthening ecological and social resilience through locally grounded interventions, community stewardship and landscape-scale planning.
