Title : Urbanization and flood risk in Abuja, Nigeria under climate change
Abstract:
Abuja the capital of Nigeria my country of origin is changing fast. New buildings, roads, and neighborhoods are springing up across the city, but this rapid urban growth comes with a cost: floods are becoming more frequent and severe. My research explores how urbanization, combined with the effects of climate change, is shaping flood risk in the city. Using GIS based flood mapping, rainfall trend analysis, and urban expansion studies, I examine the area’s most vulnerable and the factors driving these risks. Early findings highlight that without careful planning, urban growth can worsen flood impacts, threatening lives and infrastructure. This study emphasizes the importance of climate-aware city planning, sustainable drainage, and policies that put resilience at the center. By connecting the realities of urban expansion with climate change, my work aims to inform practical strategies for safer, more resilient cities not just in Abuja, but in rapidly growing urban centers worldwide.
