Title : Ode to the hidden grove: A poetic concerto of subtropical agroforestry based integrated management
Abstract:
Global climate change, land resource constraints, and rural revitalization strategies are driving subtropical regions to adopt innovative agroforestry-based integrated management models that reconcile ecosystem conservation with livelihood diversification. This study develops a comprehensive framework for subtropical agroforestry-based integrated management systems across Guangxi and neighboring regions by integrating extensive regional surveys, a systematic literature review, and multi-scenario demonstration trials-including fertilization comparisons, combined pot experiments, rhizobox assessments of biological nitrogen fixation, and vegetative propagation survival tests. The results demonstrate that the integrated application of compound fertilizers and microbial inoculants significantly promotes the growth performance of understory medicinal and economic crops, reduces dependence on chemical fertilizer inputs, and enhances soil biological activity and fertility. Rhizobox experiments further confirm the nitrogen-fixation potential of leguminous medicinal tree species within agroforestry systems, while cutting experiments identify efficient rooting protocols that enable scalable vegetative propagation. Despite these advances, large-scale implementation of agroforestry-based integrated management remains constrained by challenges related to species–environment matching, mechanization adaptability under forest canopies, and value-chain integration. To address these limitations, the proposed framework emphasizes:
-
Species selection guided by soil–climate suitability modeling
-
Precision nutrient and water management tailored to agroforestry systems
-
Mechanization solutions adapted to understory and multi-layered production environments
-
Policy and market interventions aimed at strengthening supply chains, cooperative organizations, and value-added processing. Overall, this framework provides both theoretical insights and practical guidance for advancing sustainable agriculture, ecosystem restoration, and rural development in subtropical regions and comparable environments worldwide.
